Customer attending First City Training

We had the pleasure of welcoming two of our customers, who had previously been involved with 'reviewing our recruitment processes', onto a few hours of our induction training this month.

After listening to what was being delivered K was able to explain to attendees what it felt like to have support and how important it is to get to know the person being supported and what they like. K expressed how it is important to her to know who walks through the door and can recognise the 'YooHoo, it's only me!' or 'Hi K, guess who!". She explained what dignity is about understanding the person before interacting with the attendees.

Putting our trainer to the test, K asked lots of questions and gave the new recruits some valuable information around incidents, accidents and reporting - and how reporting everything matters to keep people safe.

K was more than happy to share her experiences with the induction attendees, giving them tips, what works well and sharing what she feels is important to know.

R joined the group during the Health & Safety session, he found infection control and hand hygiene "really interesting" and he observed a session where the carers had to wash their hands (with their eyes shut) in a dye (with gloves on) for the recommended time. The exercise identifies areas that are easily missed, and R thought it was a great way of getting people to understand that hand hygiene when supporting people needs to be very thorough.

R raised a few additional points so that attendees could hear what it is like to have people coming into your home and how important it is to get to know the person and read their support plan. He also looked at the induction handbook, specifically the cooking ideas section and is going to review the section to feedback any further suggestions to add.

Using his knowledge around Health & Safety, R gave examples of how a care worker must rely on their PPE (personal protective equipment) to stay protected. He enjoyed talking about food hygiene, infection control, PPE, food and hydration throughout the session. He finished the session by expressing how important it is to think outside the box around safety issues, always check with the person regarding lights being switched on and off, think about where you leave items or move items that may have been places specifically to keep someone safe.

When speaking to the Registered Manager R said "It's very interesting and I didn't think the training was this informative, really great work going on".

We really enjoyed welcoming our customers to our induction and really value their feedback to help us further improve the services we offer to our local community! Thank you K and R for joining us during the week, we hope we can welcome more individuals in the near future.
